2009 Mission Trip to Bluefields, Nicaragua

March 13 to March 22nd, 2009

We are going back to Bluefields in March 2009 and planning has begun! We will be returning to Verbo school to help with much needed renovations and retrofit to the aging classrooms.

Many of the classrooms are made from wood and porous material which has been severely damaged by termites and years of hurricanes. Our team will help fix the classrooms so they are safe for students and provide a learning environment they can be proud about.

Along with the construction project, we will also be bringing food packs to people that live in the local garbage dump, teaching at the school, doing outreach at the local hospital, and visiting the deaf school.

One of the new projects we are attempting this year is to bring a medical team with us to serve in the dump and a remote town North of Bluefields.  If you know an MD that wants to head up the medical clinic, please have them email us.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What would I be able to do on the mission?

There are many waves to serve on the mission.  Physical work (construction, mixing concrete, painting etc) is always present.  There’s also work we do for outreach at the school where arts and crafts, musical talents and the ability to have fun with kids is valuable.  There is never a problem finding places to serve, you just have to be willing to go out and try something new.  Nobody will force you to mix concrete for 8 hours unless that’s something you really want to do…and we won’t stop you.

What will I get out of it?

You’ll gain a greater sense of what you can do in this world.  You’ll have a greater appreciation for what you have and what you lack here in North America.  Poor in resources, but rich in spirit, those we serve are the opposite of what we have and in many cases through serving them, we are becoming better people ourselves, in our faith, in our greater awareness of what kind of a difference we can make in this world and in love for all God’s people.  This trip is chance for you to go out there and feed the poor, bring water to the thirsty, visit those who are lonely, comfort the sick, show love for the imprisoned, and make a difference in many lives.  Its only 10 days, but it will be 10 days you will never forget.  The question is not why you should go, but rather consider the benefits and take a look if there are solid reasons why you shouldn’t.

Is it dangerous?  Will I die?

Its scary doing anything outside our comfort zone, especially in a strange new place.  But these mission trips have always been safe and we have never had a problem or a close call.  This will be our fifth trip to Nicaragua with the organization Samaritan’s Purse who has set up an infrastructure making mission trips safe and enjoyable.  Before we leave we are vaccinated and take medication for the trip.  All team members receive training before they go so they know they are best prepared for the trip ahead.
