In an age where the Canadian federal government is running a massive budget surplus of $911 million dollars (see this news story), it’s comforting to see that the country has not neglected its responsibility to helping the global community.

In an announcement made yesterday, November 8, that the Canadian International Development Agency (or CIDA) will donate $4 million Canadian dollars to the World Food program which in turn will feed school children in Nicaragua for a year.

“This money will go to some of the poorest areas of Nicaragua and feed over 175,000 school children,” said Minister Oda, the Minister of International Cooperation. “Today’s announcement is part of Canada’s ongoing response to the after-effects of Hurricane Felix and the recent flooding in Nicaragua, which have both destroyed crops and reduced food security.”

This announcement is part of a larger plan where Canada hopes to help Nicaraguans gain better access to education by helping eliminate extreme poverty and hunger in children.
