A few days ago Pastor Ed told me that the transportation strike has been making life difficult in Bluefields. But it would appear that the strike is now over with the announcement of a government fuel subsidy to help taxis and buses across Nicaragua.
After 12 days and upsetting the routines of everyday Nicas, the cost [...]

It was only a matter of time.
With the skyrocketing price of gasoline around the world and cost of a barrel of crude at the $120 mark, it’s no surprise to see the drivers in Nicaragua revolt against the crippling cost of fuel.
Drivers of taxis and buses are pressuring the Nicaraguan government to help provide a [...]
A few days ago I posted this article about Canada increasing its food aid contribution to the WFP by $45 million USD. With the increase in world food prices and Canada’s existing commitment to helping Nicaragua in November, I wondered if Canada will adjust their contribution to Nicaragua to account for the inflation of food [...]

Today, the government of Canada has announced that it will increase its contribution to the UN’s World Food Programme by an additional $45 million Canadian dollars ($50.5 million US dollars). This announcement comes a day after renewed pleas from the UN for wealthy countries to help offset the increased cost of food for the programme.

While environmental concerns are increasingly urgent, they are often put aside in developing countries where [...]

In a delicious twist of irony, following the reports of sky-rocketing food prices having an effect in increasing poverty in Nicaragua, April 13th is Gallo Pinto Day in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is attempting to take the crown from Nicaragua by making the world’s biggest gallo pinto. Nicaragua currently holds the world record by serving 18,400, [...]

Guardian news just released a report that corroborates the observations and accounts I have been hearing on the ground in Nicaragua. With the increase in food prices, the poor are the ones being affected the most. With more income being spent on food, this leaves little for anything else.
In Bluefields, it costs $0.75 USD for [...]
