Children of the Quarry

On the 4th day of our Mission in Bluefields, we had the opportunity to go to the Rock Quarry (for more information about the Quarry, see this post I wrote earlier).

What impacted me the most was the children who lived and worked within the quarry. It’s very difficult to see children break rocks so that their families can earn money to feed themselves. Children shouldn’t have to live like this… they should be allowed to be children.

Despite the bleakness of their situation, there is hope for these young people - some of them are going to school. While some families will feel that sending their child to school takes away from the family income, most adults remember better days when Bluefields was prosperous and vibrant. Through education these kids have a chance at a future.

For the while we were there with these children, you can see their worries melt away. Though some were hesitant, eventually they were all laughing and sharing their toys. I learned a lot from watching these kids - despite what they’re going through, they are still children. They were humble, warm, affectionate, and full of joy. They are the reason why I want to return to Bluefields.
