This past March, Cornerstone sent a team to Bluefields, Nicaragua to help conduct a medical clinic. In this clinic we had 2 doctors, 2 nurses, 1 pharmacist, and others providing prayers and other support. Over 3 days, our volunteers saw over 300 people, many of whom were given medication they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to afford.

In Nicaragua seeing a doctor is covered by the central government, but it’s the medication that will cost money. Since majority of the country is poor (especially in rural or Atlantic regions), getting clinics to remote areas is sometimes the only way some locals will see a medical practitioner.

So when I heard that a group from Boulder, Colorado was heading to Chacraseca, Nicaragua (near Leon) to do medical clinics, I was encouraged by the fact that a few more Nicas will be getting much needed medical attention. Actually, according to this article on the local news site Daily Camera, the team from Colorado they did much more than just medical clinics. They also educated locals into better practices for preparing their food, cleaning and purifying their water, and how to vaccinate their livestock.

Through their fundraising, they were able to hire local physicians, and even a veterinarian that helped vaccinate, spay, and neuter 6000 dogs.

From their stories, it sounds like their week in Nicaragua made a tangible impact on the locals. There are some incredible tales, like the girl with pneumonia, and a lady with a punctured lung. It sounds like their timing and presence was perfect.

The team from Colorado was organized by the HOLA Foundation - Health Outreach for Latin America Foundation (http://holafoundation.org/) - a non-profit organization providing sustainable health care solutions through establishing clinics and public education.
