Stories of heart-break and hope from Nicaragua

On October 13th and 15th, members from Cornerstone Church have had opportunities to meet and greet Pastor Ed and Ligia. During both nights, a good group showed up to listen to them share about their experiences in Nicaragua and their ministry there.

Though I’ve heard most of the stories before, it’s great to hear them again to remind myself of the miraculous journey this couple has been on. One of the temptations in Western society is to get things done quickly and promptly, but in hearing Ed and Ligia recount their experiences, I realize that good things and the things worth pursuing aren’t done over night.

Hurricanes. War. Disease. Hunger. Uncertain survival. Somehow against these immense odds their ministry grew slowly over the years despite these set backs. They’ve taken all these demoralizing and devastating moments in their lives and turned it into opportunities to help people (like fostering teenage girls after Hurricane Joan, or taking two trivial pieces of plywood and turned it into a preschool for 50 children).

In my own initiatives, I need to look at their example as inspiration: patience, perseverance, and seizing opportunities no matter how difficult or impossible they may seem. They are proof that good and incredible things can happen, even in the most hostile moments.

I hope members of my church are starting to see this as well and be inspired in their own way.
