Stories of heart-break and hope from Nicaragua

Having been in Bluefields where there is some of the most extreme poverty and unemployment, I can say that the $4 million being donated by Canada is a welcome addition to help rebuild Nicaragua’s future. However, food alone is not the answer. The Canadian government and the international community must work together to give Nicaragua a fighting chance by eliminating Nicaragua’s debt, invest in the local economy, and help improve their wallowing infrastructure like agriculture, electricity, and roads.

However, I wonder if yesterday’s announcement will make an impact on Verbo’s schools. Since Verbo School is privately operated, the Nicaraguan government may not allocate part of the $4 million to them.

Though the CIDA funds will help feed a child with one meal a day, Verbo has already been doing this for their poorest students for quite some time now. In fact Verbo will be expanding their food program at their school to help serve their children better!

This coming March, our mission team will be returning to Verbo School where our main project will be to help with the construction of a new kitchen. Children must be adequately fed in order to learn, which in turn will hopefully mean brighter futures for them. We are proud to be part of that process.
