Photography is a topic near and dear to my heart. I taught myself photography 2 years ago and discovered a real passion for it. So when I combined that passion with my other passion - helping Nicaragua - it felt so natural.
So when I heard about Kathy Adams and her work with Empowerment International (or EI), I was instantly intrigued.
Kathy, the Executive Director of Empowerment International, has been making a real impact on the lives of needy children living in Nicaragua. EI’s most recent program is a creative mix of mentoring, artistry, and self empowerment. The idea is to equip young people with digital cameras and guide them to find self-expression and confidence.
The photos captured by EI’s students are absolutely stunning and thought-provoking. The perspective of these young minds is beyond what I can perceive. The images are beautiful, haunting, and sad.
I hope to do something similar when I return to Bluefields. Art and creativity is something that is seemingly lost in a world where survival and poverty is a pressing reality. The work by Empowerment International’s students and their organization is inspiring… it’s an example of how a simple idea can change lives.
