Just add a ball …

On the first afternoon we were in Bluefields, we pumped up some soccer balls we brought along from Toronto. We went out onto the street and started kicking it around. Like bees to a flower, kids slowly started to show up and before you knew it, there were 7 boys playing football (soccer for you North Americans). Then one of the girls on our team brought out a skipping rope, and the girls from the neighbourhood slowly trickled in.
By the end of our stay there, we had about 20 kids (maybe more?) coming nightly to play with us… all of this because we brought toys and gym equipment with us to Nicaragua. The soccer ball cost maybe $5, but the fun it created was just priceless.
So if you’re heading to a foreign country, bring along a ball. You’d be surprised by the connections you make.
