Due to little oversight in construction of new buildings in Managua, the city is contemplating banning new construction projects to protect the city’s water supply. According to Managua Mayor Dionisio Marenco, “In the name of free enterprise and progress, they have hurt the city’s water resources and the country.”

Because new construction destroys the forests that protect Managua’s watershed, the city’s water is at risk of becoming polluted thus affect the city’s 1.2 million citizens.

I find this issue very interesting as it shows different levels of government in Nicaragua taking an interest in protecting the environment. While there is still a lot of work to be done in protecting Nicaragua’s rain forests, this is a good start.

However, the flip side to this is the fact that the poor need land to build a home, and land to make a living such as forestry/lumber or farming.

In the end, sustainable agriculture and harvesting is most viable solution. Protecting the land while making it productive will benefit everyone including future generations.
