Stories of heart-break and hope from Nicaragua

This morning this Forbes article wandered across my inbox with a brief account of Mexico’s dedication to help Nicaragua improve its road infrastructure.

The details in that article are scant, so I did some searching myself to see which roads will be covered under this new agreement, and the time line proposed to start or complete the work. The closest article I found was this site which did not have many details either, but provided a little more information as to what is covered under the plan.

In the project, nearly 90 km of paved roads will be improved, about 70 km of dirt roads will be paved and some 292 km of the road network will be periodically maintained in order to extend its useful life and cut transport costs

I’ve been on these roads myself, both paved and dirt, and I have to say that the infrastructure is in poor condition. The roads in Bluefields are pot-holed and deteriorating. The backroads which lead to other major cities, like Managua, are muddy dirt roads which are not usable in heavy rain.

News like this is positive and I pray that it will make a true positive impact to Nicaragua’s economy.
