I am very careful about the news I report here on Nicaragua Hope. I report mostly on social and economical issues in Nicaragua, and carefully avoiding political articles and commentary. However, this article published today at Tico Times reports how the Nicaraguan government, under President Daniel Ortega, has begun to put pressure on NGOs and other social groups working within the country.

One group being targeted is troubling - Oxfam. Oxfam is responsible to many food related projects in Nicaragua including the distribution of food, development of sustainable agriculture, and education. Many exports from Nicaragua, including popular coffee, are directly or indirectly possible thanks to Oxfam.

Oxfam was also responsible for helping thousands of Nicaraguans affected by Hurricane Felix that killed at least 130 people and displaced 40,000 in the country.

It’s troubling to see this recent development in Nicaragua. Nicaragua depends on many NGOs for economical and social support, so the last thing we would like to see are NGOs leave the country.
