Our Long-term Plan
Apr 18th, 2007 by Jon
We would like to share with you some of our visions for helping the people of Bluefields. Our goal is to setup programs to help the people for the long-term. So that they can be self-sufficient and independent.
To coin a phrase, we don’t want to keep giving them a “fishâ€. We want to “teach them to fishâ€. And we also want to be as cost-effective as possible, to maximize our resources.
Our vision falls into 3 main areas.

Let’s begin with the children – That is, the children at Coco’s Orphanage, the rock quarry, the garbage dump and the Verbo Christian school.
Discussions have already begun with a Canadian charity called Compassion Canada. Compassion Canada operates in a similar way as World Vision to sponsor needy children in overseas countries. It is our plan to setup a child sponsorship program with the orphanage, the quarry, the dump and the Verbo school.
Our goal is to assist with the children’s education, their health and with family aid. These children are good children. They all want to go to school but many of them can’t because of their family’s financial situation.
They all have dreams and we want to help them reach their potential.
Each person on this team has committed to sponsoring a child, if the Compassion Canada sponsorship plan is established. We want to invite you to also join us to sponsor one of these less fortunate children. (Nicaragua Hope’s current fund raising activity is to sponsor one of these children).
Think of how you can help one of these children out of a hopeless situation at the orphanage or the quarry or the dump and to give them an education and a brighter future with some hope.
While we were at the Verbo school, we met an incredibly knowledgeable but yet humble man named Marvin. Marvin had planted a variety of trees on the Verbo school property. He was using this nursery to teach the school children how to manage their environment properly.
Marvin is an exceptional man who has taken on the task of rebuilding the agriculture infrastructure of Bluefields using eco-friendly methods. However, he can not do this alone and he needs help financially and physically.
The second vision area is a sustainable harvest of the plantation on the Verbo school property, with an outreach education plan to the farmers in the area.

This vision falls into 2 stages.
Stage 1.
Stage 1 is the expansion of Marvin’s plantation so that it can grow profitable cash crops, such as cacao, noni and mahogany, with environmentally sound agricultural practices. With proper education and resources, this plantation will be sustainable and help generate needed income for the Verbo school and the local community.
Stage 2 is the using of the plantation to educate the school children and the community to how they can manage sustainable agriculture with eco-friendly methods. The plantation will be a living and fully functional example of how profitable sustainable agriculture should be done.
We are investigating possible partnerships with an organization called Sustainable Harvest and Oxfam in Bluefields. They have the expertise in this area.
Imagine the local people taking up sustainable farming practices and prospering on their own land.
The last vision area is the boldest and that is employment.
The unemployment rate in Bluefields is approximately 80%. People want to work. But there are very few jobs available. And those people who do have jobs are very hard workers.
We have seen that.
If people have a job then they can start to support their own families, and build up their own communities and have more self-esteem. They will start to have hope and believe that they can have a brighter future.
We believe that Micro-Financing is a possible way for people to achieve this future.
Micro-Financing is a successful financing practice, pioneered by the recent Nobel laureate Dr. Yunus of the Grameen bank. The idea is to help provide a very small starter loan to small entrepreneurs.

Basic business guidance is provided. These business ideas are not big, and it could be as simple as a purchasing a sewing machine for someone who can sew well. These small home businesses grow and prosper. Then they start to expand and hire employees. Then the snowball really starts rolling…
Imagine a whole community of these small businesses growing and building and exporting.
Imagine the living standard of the whole town improving.
Imagine families being able to support themselves.
Imagine the children starting to eat healthier, dress better and going to school then to going to universities.
Imagine the next generation living better than the previous one.
Imagine how happy God will be to see his people helping those who are less fortunate.
On this website, we are sharing with you just some of the stories we have experienced and some of the visions we have to improve the lives of the people in Nicaragua.
These are visions that all everyone can participate in, not just the mission teams. You don’t have to go on a mission to help these people.
You can help without leaving your home or country.
When people don’t have any hope, that’s when they have nothing. No future. No happiness. No life.
Please help give these people some hope.

Hey Jon,
I was just perusing Nicaragua Hope tonight and wanted to say that the site is great… nice work! I love the plan you guys have laid out. I would be interested in sponsoring a child when that gets set up. Also, I do hope to get down there with you guys after I wrap up some of my studies later next year. When I lived in Rochester, NY, I was often the guest of a Nicaraguan pastor and his family– ate lots of wonderful arroz con frijoles at their place! They told me stories of what it was like to grow up there. Actually, one of the Nicaraguan brothers stood with me in my wedding. So somehow I feel like I have a bit of a connection with the country, now all the more that Cornerstone is partnering with Verbo.
You guys are doing a wonderful work for the Lord… keep it up!
