Photo Essay: After the Rain

Every morning I would wake up early and have my coffee while standing on the front porch of our house. At 6:15am in the morning, the temperature is comfortable and the streets are quiet. I would stand there breathing in the fragrant air, and listening to the unseen birds and the distant car driving by.
But soon this quiet solitude will fade away as the citizens of Bluefields begin their day.
The real reason why I wake up so early in the morning is so I can watch the children walk to school. They laugh as they chatter amongst themselves, occasionally being escorted by a watchful mother.
There are dozens of them walking down the street in front of this house on a weekday morning… and this scene plays out all over the city. Thousands of children, in their clean uniforms, heading to school - like an ocean of hope.
These mornings have kept me optimistic despite the turmoil I would see elsewhere in the city. Every morning the sight of young minds heading to class to learn gives me hope that a new day will dawn for Bluefields.

Jon,
Nice photo essay and story. It is my belief and hope as well, that education for the kids of Nicaragua will make a difference.
Blessings,
Kathy

Education is definitely key, but the economy needs to improve otherwise these bright kids have no where to go. It’s a tough situation.
Slowly, things will change. Maybe not in our lifetime?
