In Bluefields, addiction is an increasing problem. Alcoholism is common, but now drugs are appearing on the streets.
This photo I snapped while traveling in a bus on my first day in Bluefields. It was early in the morning and this young man is already drinking.
Remarkably, I think this photo touches on many of the issues facing Bluefields today.
While we were in Bluefields, we met a remarkable man who is struggling with his addiction to alcohol. As the week progressed, we saw a transformation in this person from someone who seemed to have hope, to someone desperate and sad. I will be talking more about alcoholism and drugs in Bluefields later.
