World food crisis - the reality hurts

Another day and more media coverage on the deepening world food crisis. Today, it’s the continuation of the UN’s plea for support of the World Food Programme and urging world governments to help with the shortfall in money the WFP is suddenly facing due to the surge in commodity prices.
Also announced today is the formation of a new UN task force that will tackle this growing problem.
In Canada, the nightly news typically has a piece giving the Canadian perspective to the issue - like how the cost of doing business has increased because of the high cost of flour and wheat.
Survival
The shocking fact is that survival will soon become the only issue worth addressing over the next few years. All the planning to build industry and child sponsorships will have to take a back seat as we try to figure out how we can help the poor weather this storm.
I always try to keep a hopeful attitude about the problems facing Nicaragua, in particular Bluefields … but the magnitude of the food crisis is hard to grasp. I’m finding it increasingly hard to digest these reports. To me the weight of the food crisis is very real - I know children and families who will suffer because of this.
The people of Nicaragua have been through a lot. They are resourceful, resilient and brave… I pray that my worries are unfounded. In the meantime, I hope the world comes together to help… I know I will!
